Concrete is one of the most dependable, durable and versatile building materials in existence. It is used across a huge variety of projects, to deliver an affordable, hard-wearing and efficient end result.
But, did you know that you can also get different grades of concrete? These grades help to maximise the performance of concrete even further, by providing best-fit varieties for specific use cases.
Below, we’ve shared an in depth guide into one of the most widely used concrete grades: C40 concrete (also known as ‘ST5’). Keep reading to find out more about what makes C40 concrete unique, what it can be used for, and what advantages it can bring to a project.
What is C40 concrete?
C40 concrete is a high strength concrete mixture.
When grading concrete mixtures, the number that comes after the C (with the C standing for ‘concrete’) is the concrete’s compressive strength. So, C40 concrete has a compressive strength of 40 megapascals (MPa). The higher the compressive strength, the greater the concrete’s ability to withstand loads. This is also commonly referred to as 40N, 40 newtons of strength.
What makes C40 concrete so strong is its low water-to-cement ratio, creating a mixture with a dense microstructure, a low porosity and a high density.
This high strength – C40 concrete is one of the strongest general use concrete types – makes C40 concrete ideally suited to heavy duty projects that require high strength and durability.
What are the properties of C40 concrete?
C40 concrete has a number of sought-after properties, which prove extremely valuable for a project.
These include:
- A high compressive strength
- High durability
- Extreme weather resistance, including weather fluctuations
- High resistance to water penetration
- High resistance to chemical exposures (including corrosive chemicals)
- High resistance to cracking
- Compatibility with a wide range of aggregates, admixtures and reinforcement types
At iMix Concrete, we supply a wide range of concrete varieties, including premium quality C40 concrete. So, if you’re planning on using this robust concrete variety for your upcoming project, contact our team.
What projects can C40 concrete be used for?
Thanks to its high strength, C40 concrete is ideally suited for heavy-duty projects. Its chemical and weather-resistance also make it a great choice for commercial and industrial structures, including environments where there is chemical exposure.
As such, the most common use cases of C40 concrete include:
- Infrastructure
- Multi-storey buildings
- Support beams and columns
- Heavy-duty flooring
- Loading docks
Blast-resistant structures - Security barriers
- Specialised industrial uses (such as septic tanks)
- Motorways and roads
- Pavements
- Bridges and tunnels
- Airport runways
- Agricultural facilities
- Sea walls
Even in these extreme areas and use cases, C40 concrete is able to deliver an exceptional standard of long-term strength and durability, making it an extremely reliable material.
It is able to withstand harsh conditions with ease, while boasting a long lifespan and minimal maintenance requirements.
