Why waterproof concrete?

Waterproof concrete is necessary for a variety of applications, including basements, retaining walls, swimming pools and ponds, to ensure a damp-proof and watertight finish. Benefits of waterproof concrete include:

How do you test how waterproof the concrete is?

The most common measure is the water cement ratio (w/c). Water Cement Ratio = Total Water / Cement

The optimum range for this w/c ratio, with good workability and high compressive strength, is generally thought to be between 0.35 – 0.40, with most concretes being in the 0.375 – 0.400 w/c range.

If the mix has too little water it becomes very difficult to place and compact and hydraulicity from excess water can be an issue even when using admixtures such as superplasticisers or air entraining agents to try and ‘dilute’ the excess water causing problems later in the pour. For highly waterproof mixes, too much water is not desirable as it can cause problems in placing and compaction or even lead to segregation of aggregate particles.
