There are a huge variety of different concrete strengths out there, each one with its own specific benefits and capabilities. For anyone unfamiliar to the construction industry, this can quickly get very confusing! 

So, to help you understand what different concrete strengths we have available, and what type of project each concrete strength is best designed for, we’ve used this article to create a quick and easy concrete strength guide. 

Below, you can find our full list of concrete types, strengths and recommended uses for each.  

What types of concrete does iMix Concrete supply? 

We supply three types of concrete – On-site mixed concrete, Ready-mixed concrete, and Volumetric concrete.

These can be delivered to the exact strength and volume that your project requires, 

What concrete strengths does iMix Concrete offer?

Our concrete strengths range from grade C10 to C40

The higher the grade, the stronger it is. For example, C10 has a strength of 8 newtons, meaning it is best used in kerb backing and bedding projects. Whereas C40, which is the strongest concrete that we offer, has a strength of 40 newtons, making it ideally suited for the structure of industrial or agricultural areas (which will need to withstand heavy objects and regular tread).

What are the different types of concrete strengths?

Here are the concrete grades and strengths that we offer, alongside the strength and recommended use of each:

C8 / Gen 0

Has a strength of 8N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for kerb backing, bedding 8N, mass and cavity fills, and blinding.

C10 / Gen 1

Has a strength of 10N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • Cavity and mass fill
  • Pad, conservatory, wall or shed foundations
  • Filling trenches and some agricultural uses
  • Kerbing and haunching
  • Domestic foundations with unreinforced, built-in DC-1 soil
  • Oversite below suspended floors or binding house floors
  • Drainage works 10N
  • Strip footings not reinforced
  • Mass concrete in non structural applications in areas with DC-1 non-aggressive ground

C15 / Gen2

Has a strength of 15N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • Floors with no embedded metal
  • Both unreinforced and reinforced strip footings for small walls
  • Shed, walls and conservatory foundations
  • Paving steps and paths
  • Foundation filling for trenches
  • Blinding
  • Any unreinforced mass concrete fill

C20 / Gen3 / ST1

Has a strength of 20N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • Single storey foundations
  • Internal floor slabs (as long as they don’t contain metal, and will be covered over afterwards)
  • Domestic garage floors (if the space is designed for use as a workshop, we would recommend C25/C30 instead)
  • Oversites (for example, for garages, sheds or greenhouse and conservatories)
  • Bases for sheds, driveways and workshops
  • Garage, shed, greenhouse and conservatory un-reinforced bases
  • Blinding
  • Patio under paving
  • Fill of mass concrete or trenches
  • Strip unreinforced footings

C25 / ST2

Has a strength of 25N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • General groundwork
  • Un-reinforced strip footings and fence post footings
  • Un-reinforced foundations 
  • Bases for extensions, houses or patios
  • Trench fills
  • House floor blinding and pad foundations
  • Kerbs, unreinforced house floors (with permanent finish) and patios
  • Drainage and filling (for example, around manholes and trenches)
  • Mass concrete for non aggressive, non structural (DC-1) ground
  • Agricultural projects (in some cases)

C30 / ST3

Has a strength of 30N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • Driveways
  • Paths
  • Pavements
  • Patios
  • Bases for garages, greenhouses and sheds
  • Foundations for extensions, houses, large walls and garages
  • Garage, shed, greenhouse or conservatory unreinforced oversites 

C35 / ST4

Has a strength of 35N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • Reinforced walls and floors
  • Reinforced bases for workshops
  • External slabs
  • Unsuspended and unreinforced garage floors
  • Indoor floor slabs (not containing metal)
  • Chamber benching
  • Bedding for channels and drains

C40 / ST5

Has a strength of 40N, and offers 28 day strength

Recommended for: 

  • Industrial applications
  • Structural applications
  • Farms or agricultural equipment stores
  • HGV parks
  • Foundations for traffic sign posts
  • Posts for environmental barriers
  • Planted lighting columns
  • Floor slabs used for garages or houses (which are either partially or completely reinforced, and are either suspended, over sub-floor voids or ground bearing)

Pav 1

Has a strength of 30N, and offers 28 day strength. PAV 1 and 2 concrete grades are made with air-entrainment additives, which provide a high level of protection against freeze-thaw issues.

Recommended for: 

  • Driveways
  • Car ports or domestic parking
  • Light duty external slabs
  • Walkways or patios (either agricultural, domestic or industrial)
  • Hard standing concrete (which is either reinforced or un-reinforced)
  • House, extension or workshop bases (these could be either reinforced or unreinforced)

Pav 2

Has a strength of 35N, and offers 28 day strength. PAV 1 and 2 concrete grades are made with air-entrainment additives, which provide a high level of protection against freeze-thaw issues.

Recommended for:

  • External slabs that are exposed to machinery and industrial vehicles
  • HGV yards
  • Car parks (heavy duty)
  • Agricultural storage areas
  • Light storage areas
  • Commercial buildings (with reinforced bases)
  • Flooring for garages or houses (with embedded metal)

Screed 4:1 and Screed 5:1

Since it has a very low strength, screed is designed to be added on top of a pre-cast concrete floor slab. Rather than providing strength, screed gives a concrete floor a neat and level final finish. As such, it is best suited for internal flooring projects.

Pattern Imprint Concrete Mix

Pattern imprint concrete is designed to be imprinted with a pattern. This means that, when dried, the concrete will retain this imprinted pattern, providing an affordable alternative to laid stone or concrete paving. As such, it is commonly used for driveways, baths, concrete walls, and surrounds for outdoor concrete fireplaces.
