When it comes to undertaking new building work for your commercial or domestic property, ensuring that you use the correct type of concrete is an absolutely fundamental part of the process – it is, quite literally, a decision that can make or break the job. That’s why iMix concrete are proud to deliver both concrete and screed in London and nearby areas.

With this in mind, to help provide you with a better understanding of two commonly used building mixtures, in this blog post, we’ll be outlining the key differences between concrete and screed. With this knowledge on-hand, you can be sure that your latest build is safe, secure and will last you for many years to come.

Screed vs Concrete – the key properties

In many respects, concrete and screed both possess very similar properties. For example, they are both made by mixing cement and aggregate with water. However, it is when you take a look at their properties and uses that the differences between these two materials become clear.

Concrete is designed for use across a range of heavy duty construction jobs, to provide a solid, hard-wearing structure. In comparison, screed is a material which acts as a top layer, sitting above a concrete base.

When preparing these mixtures, screed and concrete both require a different type of aggregate. For screed, a fine sand is added (the grain size of this aggregate never exceeds a diameter of 4mm). This addition is what provides the material’s characteristic fine yet dense texture. In comparison, concrete is made by using coarse varieties of aggregate, which typically have a maximum diameter of 20mm.

Choosing the right type of concrete for each task at hand requires a thorough knowledge of the composition, properties and abilities of different mixtures. That’s where we come in – to help you decide the age old debate of screed vs concrete. By employing the professional services of iMix Concrete for your upcoming building work, you can ensure that the concrete that you use is sturdy, dependable, hard wearing and meets your exact requirements in full.
