A grade of concrete denotes the strength of the concrete. A knowledge of the different types of concrete grades can then be used to help determine what type of concrete would be best suited for a particular building task.
Composition
Each grade of concrete has a particular minimum strength level, which is achieved as a result of its composition. As a result, each concrete grade has a very specific composition. The composition of concrete outlines the combination of cement, coarse aggregates and sand (as well as the ratio of each of these three elements) that is used for this type of concrete.
For example, the proportion of these elements in M20 concrete is 1:3:5.
This combination determines the grade of this concrete mixture as M20. Measurements of MPa are used in concrete gradings. In this unit, the ‘M’ stands for ‘mixture’.
Strength
Each concrete grading also has its own specific level of strength, which is understood in terms of newtons. For example, a C15 concrete mixture possesses a strength level of 15 newtons. The most commonly available concrete strengths come in a range of the grade C10 to C40.
Grading
The higher the grade, the stronger the concrete and so the structure has the ability to hold a heavier load. Different buildings, surfaces and projects will each require different levels of strength and durability in the concrete used, hence why different gradings exist. Builders and project planners can choose between two different types of concrete mixes – nominal mix concrete and design mix concrete.
Nominal mix concrete is a popular choice for construction projects that are of a smaller scale. With design mix concrete, the proportions of the cement, coarse aggregates and sand that is used is decided upon as a result of lab testing.
The right ratio, and so concrete grade, is isolated for a particular project through this testing. If you are seeking the assistance of professional concrete specialists for your upcoming build, do not hesitate to get in touch with our team.
