The UK’s National Highways have recently announced that they will be repairing and replacing all concrete roads across England.
These major renovation works will take place over a 6 year project (due to start in November 2025), and will significantly improve driving conditions across the country.
In this article, we’ll delve deeper into the plans for the project, including its scope and the results that are hoped to be achieved. As ready mix concrete specialists, we’ll also provide more information about the type of concrete that will be used in the project, and explain how this will help bring more durability and safety to roads.

What does the National Highways project involve?
It was recently announced that the National Highways has launched a massive road repair project, which will cost around £968 million, and see the reconstruction of around 644 kilometres of concrete roads.
Although these roads span the majority of England, the areas that will see the most extensive repairs are the North, East, Midlands and South East of England.
The project has been initiated in order to repair roads that were originally constructed between the 1960s and 1980s. These roads are now reaching the end of their life, meaning a wide-scale replacement is needed.
What will the project achieve?
The project is set to start in November 2025, and will run for around 6 years, till November 2031.
During this time, the National Highways is aiming to:
- Increase road safety across England
- Improve driving conditions
- Minimise the number of future disruptions and road repairs
- Reduce overall road maintenance costs
- Adhere to stringent environmental targets, including reducing the project’s carbon emissions, conducting careful carbon capture reporting and recycling materials wherever possible
- Implement a long-term solution, which modernises roads, with a material that is better-suited to today’s increased numbers of road users
- Replace existing concrete roads with more durable, high performance concrete (more on this below)
What type of concrete will be used for the project?
This project will see the mass replacement of legacy roads, which used outdated and low performance (by today’s standards) concrete varieties, such as jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP).
Now, these concrete varieties are showing extensive wear and degradation. So, rather than going through a long list of case-by-case repairs, the National Highways has decided to enact this widespread replacement.
Most concrete road replacement / repair projects will use PQX Rapid Set Concrete – fast-setting concrete ideal for time-sensitive projects. Here at iMix Concrete, we can supply PQX Rapid Set Concrete, including for out-of-hours and night deliveries.
Roads across England will be modernised, with a high performance concrete that is better suited to today’s requirements.
The replacement concrete used for this project will:
- Possess much higher compressive strength
- Offer rapid setting times (to keep road closures as short as possible)
- Provide a long lifespan
- Have lower maintenance requirements
- Be at a significantly lower risk of cracking or breaking down
At iMix Concrete, we are specialist concrete suppliers, trusted by businesses across the UK. We can mix and supply a huge range of premium quality concrete varieties, including high performance concrete designed for use in road repairs and replacements.
