What are the pros and cons of concrete roads?
Pros:
- Is resistant to water and frost
- It’s a good noise insulator – For example, noise insulation is important if you live close to a busy road or something similar. And for heavy vehicles such as trucks, concrete roads would be much better than asphalt as they can withstand more weight.
- It can withstand a lot of weight
- It’s easier to repair than asphalt roads
- You can’t damage the base of concrete roads as easily
Cons:
- A lot of energy is needed to heat the concrete mix
- The roads have a shorter life span than asphalt roads because cracks – which can cause accidents – appear earlier with concrete roads. In winter, these cracks fill up with water, but as it freezes and expands, more cracks occur. Then salt must be applied to reduce the risk of slipping during heavy snowfall or icy conditions. This causes the steel bars in the concrete to corrode faster than they would if there were no traffic on it at all; this means that potholes form.
