Pouring concrete is a process that requires extreme care and total precision.
In order to maximise the likelihood that your efforts will produce a clean, neat finish, you need to choose your conditions carefully.
On the date that you plan to lay the concrete, you will need to check the weather forecast in advance. Is it due to rain? Will it be particularly hot or cold? Will it be windy or humid? All of these things will need to be checked and considered before you get started.
Hot weather is an example of a tricky condition to lay concrete in.
This is due to several factors – if you plan on going ahead and laying the concrete anyway, you will need to mitigate the impact that the heat has across all of these areas.
When laying concrete in hot weather, we suggest that you consider the following:
- Re-calculate the drying time of the concrete.
- Evaluate the loading time for the concrete deliveries – it can’t take too long, because concrete tends to go off quicker in the heat
- Is it worth using transportation or on-site facilities to monitor the concrete temperature? These would keep the concrete cooler and more moist, so that it doesn’t dry out too quickly.
- Use an admixture – this will keep the water:cement ratio more stable, so limit the risk of a flawed result. For example, you may use a water reducing additive, a set retarder, or a S/Plasticiser.
- The curing time can be significantly reduced in hot weather, meaning accelerated dehydration of the concrete, which could lead to cracking. It is recommended to cover the concrete once laid with poly sheeting to prevent the moisture from releasing from the concrete too quickly, keeping the concrete hydrated will help prevent cracking and shrinkage.
By considering each of these details, you can ensure that your concrete achieves a smooth, flawless finish when it dries and while preventing shrinkage and cracking, even in hot weather.
