What is Floor Screed?

Screed is made of a blend of cement and sharp sand. Once a sub-layer of structural flooring has been set, a thin layer of screed will be set on top.

This upper screed layer covers the base of the structural flooring, in order to create a level, smooth and flawless finish. Then, other final flooring materials (such as wood or carpets) can be positioned on top more smoothly and accurately.

Concrete specialists can add the layer of screed on top of a precast slab of concrete flooring, once the concrete has been poured and solidified, or while the concrete flooring base is still in-situ.

Types of Screed

Screed comes in a wide range of types and forms, to fulfil a variety of different requirements. The most commonly used types of screed include:

  • Normal bonded screed – bonded to the concrete flooring base
  • Unbonded screed – laid above a layer of damp-proof membrane
  • Floating screed – acts as a layer of insulation, is often positioned above pipes supplying underfloor heating
  • Reinforced screed – a specialist material, such as fine glass, polypropylene or fine metal, can be added
  • Liquid screed – ideal for various applications, liquid screed is faster to set and dry

These varieties of screed are used for different jobs, and are applied using different techniques, to specific thicknesses.

For instance, if you are applying normal bonded screed on top of concrete flooring, the thickness will be at around 25mm. Whereas if you are adding a layer of floating screed, a specialist will lay the screed so that it is 65mm thick.

Another key factor that will influence the type of screed used and the required screed thickness is the nature of the site that it is being added to. Naturally, an area where there is going to be a lot of tread, traffic and heavy machinery (such as a factory) will require a higher thickness of screed.

What is the Difference between Screed and Concrete?

It can be easy to confuse screed with concrete, as both materials are made up of a mixture of cement with water and aggregates.

The key differences lie in their texture and use type. While concrete is a coarser mixture which uses larger and stronger aggregates, screed is a much finer mixture, made up of smaller aggregates.

As a result of these different properties, concrete is used to build strong, hard-wearing floor bases, while screed is used in thin layers to create a neat, sleek finish.

Screed is not commonly used in larger quantities than this because, due to the finer aggregates that are used to make it, it comes at a higher price point than concrete.

Screed Delivery

At iMix Concrete, we deliver premium quality screed across London. Our quick and efficient delivery screed supplier services have been used by construction companies and renovators across London and the surrounding areas.

Our team of concrete specialists will create a screed mixture that meets the specific requirements of your project, so you only pay for what you need (and you can use our concrete calculator as a guide). Then, we will deliver it directly to your construction site, so that it is immediately ready for your team to use.

Our screed will arrive at your site in a pre-mixed condition, which can be manually transported to the specific location.

This differs from a screed pumping service because the screed pump sprays a dry screed mixture on top of the pre-set concrete base layer. Our services provide a far more precise and neat approach to screed laying.
