But while 5,000 tonnes sounds like a lot, it’s difficult to actually picture just how much that is.
Even 5,000 tonnes of a solid would be difficult to comprehend, let alone this as a volume of gas…
How much CO2 is 5,000 tonnes?
5,000 tonnes of C02 is equivalent to:
- The electricity required to power 987 homes in a year
- Consuming 11,576 barrels of oil
- Charging a smartphone 330 million times
- Burning enough coal to power 27.5 railcars
- Driving 12.7 million miles in a car
- The annual carbon footprint of around 417 people
To put it another way, a tonne of CO2 takes up a lot of physical volume, too.
In terms of the actual space that this represents, just one tonne of CO2 is equal to an 8m x 8m cube (when at 15 degrees Celsius and sea level pressure).
If an average UK house is around 8-10 metres tall, and 4.4 metres wide, a tonne of CO2 takes up a space that’s considerably larger than the average home.
When you multiply this by 5,000… it’s a lot of CO2 that’s being saved.
