The History of Concrete
Concrete is used by the millions of tonnes every year, all around the world. This infographic will run through some of the most important milestones in the development of this ubiquitous material.
6500 BC
Cement is used by Bedouin traders for the construction of underground kilns to be used in the desert.
3000 BC
Cement is used by Chinese people to build the Great Wall of China, as well as boats.
3000 BC
In Ancient Egypt, the pyramids were built out of a rudimentary form of concrete, made from straw, mud, lime and gypsum.
300 BC – 200 AD
The Colosseum and the Parthenon, two gigantic, iconic structures, are built using Roman concrete.
1779
Bry Higgins obtains a patent for hydraulic cement to be used for exterior plastering.
1824
Portland Cement is invented by a Leeds man named Joseph Aspdin, by burning ground chalk and clay in a lime kiln, removing the carbon dioxide and then grinding up the remaining product.
1889
In San Francisco, the first reinforced concrete bridge is built; the Alvord Lake Bridge.
1903
The first concrete building – the Ingalls Building – is constructed in Cincinnati, Ohio.
1913
The first delivery of ready mix concrete takes place in Baltimore, Maryland.
1930
Air entrainment is developed, which is still used to this day to prevent freeze-thaw damage.
1970
In order to facilitate the need for bigger, taller and stronger buildings, commercial use of fibre-reinforced concrete begins.
2018
The first 3D-printed ‘concrete’ is created by the University of Zurich. The ‘smart slab’ weighs half as much as a normal slab and is only 20mm thick at its thinnest point.
