Here at iMix Concrete we have put together a handy glossary of terms to help you get a better understanding of the products and services we offer.

A – Aggregates – The ingredients that make up concrete; water, cement, crushed stone, and sand are all types of aggregate.
B – Barrow Mix Concrete – A convenient way of transporting concrete over short distances; transferring the concrete from truck to barrow and then to the required location.
C – Concrete Pumping – The act of moving the concrete from the mixing truck to the site location. It’s quick, clean and effective.
D – Drying Shrinkage – The contracting of concrete. Caused by water loss, it can lead to cracking and warping.
E – Expansion Joint – A piece of equipment that absorbs expansion and contraction that occurs in concrete due to temperature.
F – Fibre Concrete – Fibres are added to increase the structural integrity of the concrete.
G – Grade of concrete – The grade of concrete is the minimum strength the concrete must have, 28 days after construction.
H – High Strength Concrete – Stronger than traditional concrete mixes and used for heavy duty applications like tower blocks and roads.
I – Iblocks – iMix’s patented concrete blocks. They can slot together seamlessly for a robust, reliable structure such as flood defences, retaining walls and storage spaces.

P – Poured concrete – Poured concrete is where concrete is poured into a form in order for it to set in place.
Q – Quality Control BSI Concrete – All our concrete meets the stringent BSI standards, so you can be sure of its quality and integrity.
R – Ready Mix Concrete – Ready mix concrete is mixed at a batching plant to the exact specifications of the client, ensuring the right type and amount is delivered to a site.
S – Self Compacting Concrete – This concrete flows under its own weight, meaning it can be poured over otherwise tricky things such as underfloor heating pipes without having to worry about gaps.
T – Truck mixer – A truck mixer mixes the concrete and keeps it moving whilst in transit.
U – Underfloor Heating Concrete – Concrete that flows round the pipes of underfloor heating, leaving no gaps.
